Nigerian Woman, 4.0 GPA during pregnancy and childbirth. Statement of Purpose Health Care Administration

I write what follows in the hope of being considered for the Dean’s List Award, as a graduate student at XXXX, in the Department of Health Care Administration. I will be graduating this coming May of 2017 and currently have a cumulative GPA of 4.0. My GPA is the best testimony to my drive, determination, passion, discipline, communication skills, and potential for creative thinking. I also hope to be selected on the basis of my achievements as a professional and a volunteer; and as someone who has overcome great hardship and difficult challenges along the way.

I am not only proud of the fact that I have a 4.0 GPA, but especially so given the fact that during my studies I became pregnant and had my baby. It was tough to maintain my GPA through this period. As a student who came from a developing country, Nigeria, I have proven myself over the course of many struggles and I have always weathered the storm. I have excelled at customer service, generating increasing satisfaction and loyalty and I have also distinguished myself in the development and analysis of quality performance plans. I have demonstrated strong leadership skills, and the ability to train, mentor, and motivate staff.

My contributions to the campus community include my participation in the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Walk in Long Beach, and the Zero Prostate Cancer Run/Walk, both in 2016. Currently, I am on the volunteer waiting list to serve at Autism Speaks in Long Beach. I have also been an employee of California State University, Long Beach, serving as a Student Administrative Assistant (Work-Study, August 2015 – April 2016). It was an honor to serve as a point of contact for data base searches by management and staff. I maintained and regularly updated the staff database ensuring compliance with departmental policies and providing admission triaging that accelerated admission processes for the fall enrollment. I also assisted in the development and preparation of information packets for students and acted as a receptionist answering questions and directing calls to appropriate personnel.

Much of my professional experience I acquired back home in Nigeria, serving as an Assistant Healthcare Manger for the XXXX Medical Centre in Benin, Edo State from January of 2006 through December of 2007. I monitored shift-change among nurses and created weekly reports, improved our filing system and record keeping in such a way that it both improved efficiency and better protected patient privacy. Much of my duties involved providing administrative support to the admission and discharge department. At Torrey Home, in Dala, Kano State, I served as a Healthcare Administrative Officer from January of 2008 through February of 2010. My duties included the creation of fundraising campaigns to raise money for equipment, food and other necessities. I interviewed and hired support staff to assist with fundraising events for the organization and negotiated quotes and prepared contracts to purchase medical equipment, supplies and services. I also presented workshops on cultural differences and introduced various workforce investment programs to improve the interpersonal skills of staffs and develop a more unified workforce

Since December of 2013 I have been volunteering at the International Christian Center here in XXXX, coordinating learning activities for children.  I assist with day-to-day business operations, program development, and prepare, teach and guide Bible study activities.

I am currently completing an internship (January – May 2017) with the Director of the Emergency Preparedness Department at the Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Long Beach where I am busy organizing a workshop to raise awareness concerning home disaster preparedness and reaching out to local religious organizations for their support and participation.

Health promotion is the center of my world and I have just completed a business proposal/project for a not-for-profit health and fitness center as a class project. I could not be more engaged in my studies and my work and I have always been this way, which is why I won a Kano State Honor Award as a student in Nigeria.

My central goal is to give my all to helping those who most need my help in healthcare settings. I want to make important contributions to the literature in health care management; and, at some point in my career, I want to work to build bridges with Nigeria, helping to build and manage long term care facilities in particular.

I thank you for considering my application for the Dean’s List Award.
