Public Health Cancer Epidemiology, Chinese

The Department of Epidemiology at the XXXX School of Public Health is my first choice for graduate school because I feel strongly that it is the best Public Health program with a focus on Epidemiology in the world. A Chinese man who has worked intensively in English since I was six years old, attending international schools with a mostly English curriculum, I like to think of myself as a near-native speaker/writer and this will help me to excel and distinguish myself in your state-of-the-art program and advance as a scientist.

I want to study and do research alongside the finest cancer epidemiology research teams on the planet, students and teachers from all over the world, at Harvard. I also look forward to learning from my student colleagues in your highly international program, especially those from the Developing World and those concerned with the proliferation of disease in China.

Now in my final year of study at the University of XXXX, I will soon be graduating with a degree in Animal Science. Most of what I have learned about mammals in general will also help me to excel in Public Health Epidemiology. As a student in China, I represented the China Agriculture University on television shows and I am also a published author in my home country and language. I am completing joint degree as a result of collaboration between the China Agriculture University where I am an Aquaculture major and the University of XXXX. I will earn my degree from both institutions next May, 2017. I am also enrolled in a post-bac, non-degree program with the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES)-NIH, studying Bioinformatics and Biostatistics in public health. I will finish this course as well in May of 2017.

I am especially interested in developing a cutting-edge understanding of the causes of prostate and kidney cancers with the ultimate goal of improving men’s health; thus, I look forward to intensive research projects that integrate epidemiological and biomarker data in international cancer epidemiology cohorts so as to shed light on the etiology and survival of cancers of the prostate, testis, kidneys and bladder in men. From a public health perspective, I want to spend the balance of my professional life studying genetic and nutritional factors associate with these cancers worldwide. Thus, XXXX is the ideal location, enabling me to work closely in support of other researchers at HSPH and to learn from world experts about the clinical, biostatistical, and pathological aspects of cancer, especially given the fact that Harvard hosts the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.

In support of cancer research, I look forward to decades of study, design, and analysis in the area of integrative molecular epidemiology. After completing your program and gaining additional research experience, I plan to earn a PHD in Epidemiology, continuing my focus on the interplay between genetic factors on the one hand, and environmental and nutritional factors on the other, always in search of the mechanism behind the cancer.

I also hope to learn as much as I can at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center about drug treatments to fight prostate and kidney cancer.  My ideal job would be to give my all full time to cancer epidemiology research and I would like to teach at some point in my career. Most of all, I seek a lifetime and thoroughgoing immersion in the study of integrative molecular epidemiology.

I thank you for your consideration of my application to XXXX Public Health.
